Jill Scott is the only daughter of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. As an only girl She was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott was a student at her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. While working two jobs as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She hoped to be an English teacher at high school. However, she was not able to achieve her dream, however, when after studying for three years while working as a teacher assistant in college, she decided to leave. After starting her career doing live poetry shows and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. In the Roots performance, she declared her artist status. Her subsequent collaborations included Eric Benet Will Smith Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience the arts of performing during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
